Sulphur Creek Nature Center

The Sulphur Creek Nature Center is maintained by the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (HARD) and serves as a wildlife rehabilitation and education facility located along the eastern edge of Hayward. This wildlife refuge is home to many native animals who have been sick, injured, or orphaned and serves as an oasis for its animal residents. The Nature Center welcomes 40,000 visitors each year, from school-aged children to seniors. Community members engage with the Nature Center throughout the year through a variety of educational programs, camp opportunities, and community events.

The HARD Foundation is in the process of redesigning and reimagining the site of one of our community’s most beloved facilities, the Sulphur Creek Nature Center. The HARD Foundation seeks donations for a significant renovation of this beloved Nature Center, which will include the construction of an outdoor classroom, amphitheater, entry kiosk, and welcome area – and the addition of interpretive and wayfinding signage. Construction will begin in Fall of 2023 on major renovations that will include the following:

Outdoor classroom: Paved pavilion structure providing shade and shelter for picnic tables, a professor’s podium, audiovisual equipment, and classroom storage intended to be used for interactive learning opportunities, camps, field trips, and collaborative community events. Fremont Bank Foundation funds will make this Outdoor Classroom possible, and your gift will be recognized on signage adjacent to the Outdoor Classroom.

Amphitheater: Open-air stadium with rustic log seating surrounded by natural landscaping that will serve as a venue for lectures and performances.

Wayfinding signage: Comprehensive messaging detailing the layout and amenities offered, educational materials about the animal residents of the nature center, and placards about the native flora and fauna will orient visitors throughout the experience.

Donations will also support the general construction costs for earthwork, removal, grading, and landscaping necessary to create a safe, inviting atmosphere for visitors.
