The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (H.A.R.D.) Foundation has been recognized nationally for its leadership in fundraising and community impact. The Foundation received the Lehman Award for Park Foundation Excellence in Fundraising Strategy from the National Association of Park Foundations (NAPF) — a prestigious honor that celebrates innovation, strategy, and measurable results in support of parks and recreation.
The award acknowledges the success of the “I ❤️H.A.R.D.” Annual Campaign, a community-driven initiative that has strengthened access to recreation programs and supported projects across the greater Hayward area. Through this campaign, the Foundation has raised awareness and funding for scholarships, park improvements, and special programs that ensure everyone—regardless of means—can experience the health and joy that parks and recreation provide.
“This award is a testament to the power of community,” said Steven Love, Executive Director of the H.A.R.D. Foundation. “It recognizes not only our fundraising strategy, but the incredible generosity of our donors, the dedication of our Board, and the commitment of our partners who believe that recreation should be accessible to all.”
Accepting the award on behalf of the Foundation at the 2025 National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Conference in Orlando, Florida were Peter Rosen, Director H.A.R.D. Board of Directors, and James Wheeler, General Manager of the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District.
The Lehman Award shines a national spotlight on the Foundation’s growing capacity to advance recreation access, community health, and environmental stewardship. From scholarships and youth programs to capital initiatives like the Sulphur Creek Nature Center Discovery Museum, the Foundation continues to demonstrate how philanthropy and parks together build stronger, healthier communities.
