Fremont Bank Grant Provides Funding for Outdoor Classroom at Sulphur Creek Nature Center
The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (H.A.R.D.) celebrated the grand reopening of the newly renovated Sulphur Creek Nature Center on October 7, 2024, marking a significant milestone for this beloved community resource. The event, attended by the H.A.R.D. Foundation and over 100 enthusiastic community members, highlighted the transformative changes to the wildlife education and rehabilitation facility at 1801 D Street in Hayward.
The renovations, designed to enhance visitor experiences and environmental education, include the following key elements:
· Outdoor Education Area: Thanks to a generous $100,000 grant from the Fremont Bank Foundation, the new outdoor education space features a rustic shade structure and versatile outdoor desks that can be converted into bench seating or picnic tables, creating an inviting space for learning and gathering.
· Amphitheater: Constructed from reclaimed trees, the amphitheater provides a unique setting for educational lectures, performances, and community events, seamlessly blending into the natural environment.
· Interpretive and Wayfinding Signage: New signage throughout the center educates visitors about local wildlife, while wayfinding elements make navigating the grounds more accessible and enjoyable.
· Welcome Kiosk and Map: This new information hub greets visitors and provides a comprehensive orientation to the center’s many offerings.
· Updated Seating Areas: Visitors can relax and take in the sights between the aviaries and bridge, with new seating offering comfort and scenic views of wildlife exhibits.
· Pollinator Garden: Funded through a generous donation from Ann Pendleton, the pollinator garden features native plants that support local ecosystems and raise ecological awareness.
This extensive renovation, with a total cost of $1,264,000, was made possible by a $498,000 grant from the Outdoor Environmental Education Facility, a $100,000 grant from the Fremont Bank Foundation, a $40,000 grant from the H.A.R.D. Foundation, a $20,000 gift from Ann Pendleton, a $10,000 gift from the Wagner Family, and proceeds from the Measure F1 Bond. The collective efforts of these partners and community supporters underscore the project’s community-driven spirit.
H.A.R.D. Foundation Board President Linda Cliff shared, “Sulphur Creek holds a special place in the hearts of many. We are deeply grateful to our partners, such as Fremont Bank, and our community for making these remarkable improvements possible.” Gene Anderson, H.A.R.D. Foundation Board Member and Vice President of Commercial Underwriting at Fremont Bank, echoed this sentiment: “As a community-focused bank, Fremont Bank is proud to have played a role in revitalizing such a cherished community resource.”
